Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. Here is a little bit about why I want to raise money for Ward 2 (the oncology ward) at the Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh.....
On the 1st of June 2004 Aaron, my son, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (a rapidly progressing cancer of the blood) at just five years old. It was devastating news for us all and very quickly our lives went from excitedly preparing Aaron for starting pirmary school, that coming August, to watching him have to endure a gruelling chemotherapy and steroid regimen. We spent the first month living in the hospital while Aaron's body fought to get into remission and the chemotherapy, although aimed at the cancer cells, affected his healthy cells too meaning Aaron lost his beautiful head of hair within the first few weeks of treatment.
During the first year Aaron and I spent weeks at a time staying in the Sick Kids because his low immune system left him open to infections and he required blood transfusions regularly. But throughout the entire 3 years and 3 months that Aaron received treatment from the hospital he never stopped smiling and reminding us just how lucky we were.
I put a lot of his positivity and approach to his treatment down to the way that it was introduced to him. The Doctors and Nurses could not have made it easier for him to understand nor could they have made it less terrifying. I was allowed to sleep next to Aaron and tend to his needs every night that he had to stay in the ward and, between the Nurses, Play workers and Nursing assistants, the days were filled with a buzz of productivity and optimisim.
Aaron has just celebrated his 14th birthday and is happy and healthy and planning a future in medicine......all thanks to his experience.
On the 29th, 30th, 31st March and the 1st April 2013 my friend Bobby and I are going to be walking up to 29 miles a day to complete the West Highland Way. We are doing this to raise money specifically for Ward 2 so that the wonderfully dedicated team there can continue to help other children and their families have as positive an experience as we had.
For Aaron.....my biggest inspiration. Love you Bubs xxxx
