Story
As a child, I always loved sport. In 2001, I lost my Grandad Alan, to Cancer. My Grandad was my hero and my inspiration: I was heartbroken. I decided to channel my grief into something positive: The Great North Run.
I joined Wallsend Harriers, with a view to realising my potential. What I found at Wallsend, was my soulmate, Steve. Incredibly, his Father (Terry) was my coach and my inspiration.
My social scene was exciting and my life purposeful. The Great North Run was always central to this, with Terry and I always enjoying a (reasonably) friendly rivalry. Pretty soon, my goals became more maternal than athletic. I gave birth to two beautiful children, Shay and Isla, and they had a Grandad just as amazing as mine.
Within months, Shay and Isla had the unique experience of watching their Grandad run for England - finishing a heroic 2nd place in an international x-country race.
Tragically, it was the last steps my hero ever ran. Within weeks, Terry was diagnosed with a brain tumour. After a typically brave battle, Grandad Terry joined Grandad Alan. Within months, Shay and Isla suffered more heartbreak when Grandma Norma was also taken by the same disease.
After a number of years, I will compete in the Great North Run for : a great cause, great memories and for three great grandparents.
