It had to happen and it has. Our wonderful former adoption donkey Teddy has been gently put to sleep. We became aware that he had developed an infection that would have required some significant veterinary intervention. Knowing that this wasn’t guaranteed to bring him relief and that he was already struggling with many of the ailments of an elderly donkey, we made the difficult and heart-breaking decision.  

It was a very gentle, peaceful and painless passing in the company of his favourite grooms, who held him in their arms until his final moment, and best friend Lucky – the best last gift we could give - I can promise you that.    Please don’t be sad for Teddy.   This amazing donkey actually had the life we would wish for every donkey on the planet.  Born with no sight, he came to us at just three years of age with his sighted friend, Lucky. He was loved from day one and for more than a quarter of a century, probably did not know of his own disability instead enjoying a happy and fulfilled life.

So many of you have loved and followed the life of Teddy and, for that, we are truly grateful. Many have visited and had the pleasure of giving him a wonderful bottom rub as he stood in his favourite spot next to the fence.  To you he was an incredibly special donkey as he was to us and for those that adopted him, your support and love for this special donkey helped deliver thousands of other donkeys from fear, suffering and loneliness. Thank you.

Together, we can continue to reach out to many needy donkeys throughout the world – if we can give more donkeys the sort of wonderful life Teddy enjoyed, I’m sure Teddy would approve! So, shine on Teddy – we will always love you and miss you – and – next time you feel a sunbeam warm your face – it could just be Teddy shining down on you.
