Story

I recently cycled 115 miles from my new home of Todmorden to the company I work for, Robinwood's, other activity centre in Alston. When I came into work on the Monday everyone was asking me if I did it for any particular reason. One person even asked me 'How much did you raise?'. After I told them that I just fancied a bit of a bike ride, I realised that I could actually be using my powers of cycling for good, so I started thinking about another adventure. Given that the third and only other Robinwood centre is about a mile from my house, I decided I needed somewhere a little more challenging. One day I was riding back into town past the Todmorden sign as usual which reads "Twinned with Roncq, France and Bramsche, Germany" and I thought 'I wonder if I could cycle between them'...

Google Maps tells me it is 286 miles, across 4 countries, which I am going to try to complete in 3 days, followed by cycling back to my family home in Kent on the 4th day, via Calais. I would love to take it at a more leisurely pace but I am going to leave the day after my friend's Stag Do and attempt to make it back the night before fulfilling my duties as an usher at his wedding.

All money raised will be donated to The Calvert Trust, a charity that provides residential outdoor activity courses for people of all ages with physical, sensory, learning, behavioural and/or mental disabilities. Since joining Robinwood I have had the pleasure of working with a couple of wonderful kids with disabilities. Although we have excellent provision for these children, we are not able to accommodate every child. The Calvert Trust specialises in challenging disability through outdoor adventure. I would like every child to have the opportunity to experience this.
The first 100 pounds will be matched by Robinwood.

I have never really attempted anything this substantial before and certainly not outside the UK so I'm sure it will be an adventure. I will need your support, if for no other reason than it is slightly ominous that Todmorden in German means 'Death Murder'...

About the charity

The Lake District Calvert Trust provides residential outdoor activity courses for people of all ages with physical, sensory, learning, behavioural and/or mental disabilities. Its mission is to challenge disability through outdoor adventure. Pioneering equipment adaptations, and intensive, instructor-led activity programmes (that include climbing, abseiling, canoeing, sailing, horse/trap driving, archery, orienteering and paragliding), provide an environment whose aims are to teach, challenge, motivate, engender confidence in ability, promote independence, and foster integration. All instructors are highly trained and specialist qualified, and the facilities are specially adapted and fully accessible to all. The Lake District Calvert Trust provides a unique and life-changing experience for those with disabilities, who are encouraged to believe that it’s what you CAN do that counts.
