On 19th July I will be competing in Ironman UK, my toughest (craziest) challenge ever. Ironman is a triathlon comprising of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride followed by a 26.2 mile run. Completing any 1 of these events by itself is hard, but I will be attempting to complete it in under the 17 hour cut off.
I am doing this is to prove to myself that "Anything is Possible" and to raise awareness and support of the charity Brainstrust and the fantastic work they do.
In October 2009 I was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour., although I was not aware of the support that Brainstrust provides at that time. However since then I have completed 2 London to Paris bike rides, the last one was 100 days after my last operation. I had planned to complete the 3 Cities bike ride at the end of May but unfortunately I took a tumble off my bike and chipped a bone in my hand which won't have healed in time for this ride. It will however be fine for July.
Brainstrust is a fantastic charity which among other things provides a 24 hour phone line and email support, meet ups, clinical care for brain tumor sufferers and co-ordinated support in their search for treatment. I was really impressed with the meet up which I attended in Chelmsford and I would recommend anyone who has been diagnosed or knows someone who has been diagnosed to attend one.
