London Marathon 2023 · 23 April 2023 ·

1 in 100 people have coeliac disease, yet only 36% are diagnosed. Coeliac UK empowers everyone affected, breaking down barriers, improving everyday life, offering trusted support and advancing research towards a cure. And we do it all so that one day, no one’s life will be limited by gluten.

Story

Last October, Younger Me dropped Future Me right in it by entering, and subsequently achieving, a ballot place in the 2023 London Marathon in April. You can imagine my excitement...

Too many people now know about it for me to back out. So, some good may as well come out of it and I can think of no better charity that the one that has affected those closest to me.

Coeliac disease is a serious auto-immune disease that occurs in genetically predisposed people where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine. It is estimated to affect 1 in 100 people worldwide, but only about 30% are properly diagnosed.

People with coeliac disease have a 2x greater risk of developing coronary artery disease, and a 4x greater risk of developing small bowel cancers.

My wife and son went a number of years undetected but have benefitted from this charity since their diagnosis. Any pennies you have spare would be hugely appreciated, and may make me think twice about hitting the snooze button and having a lie-in on April 23rd.
