The Dickens Fellowship is a world-wide organisation which exists to enjoy and promote the works of Charles Dickens. The Dickens Declaimers are a group of readers formed from within the Broadstairs branch of The Dickens Fellowship.
Written in 1843, A Christmas Carol is a cautionary tale of how we can easily lose sight of what Christmas is really all about, and a story that has travelled well since Dickens wrote it. The story never loses its appeal, nor its message, and probably never will do.
Dickens gave readings not only in this country but also abroad, to huge audiences with great success. One review in the press noted that “Mr.Dickens is the greatest reader of the greatest writer of the age.” The Dickens Declaimers try to emulate the great man in this, probably his most famous work. Dickens’s concern for the oppressed, the poor and the very young is legendary and he sought to right the many wrongs existing in the 19th Century world with his books which brought the plight of the abused, neglected and vulnerable to the fore. Now more than ever, children are in need of extra support and the Dickens Fellowship is proud to continue Dickens’s own mission by raising awareness through his works.
