Story
Dev Patel's birthday is getting closer and in his honour I decided to open this fundraising to help one of his favourites non-profit organization.
Dev Patel had chosen Railway Children as a charity partner for the film Lion with his #LionHeart campaign back in 2016, but he showed his support even during the Coronavirus crisis of last year, when he recorded a special video message which was posted on their website (here: https://bit.ly/2ORCTLq).
What is Railway Children and what they do:
Railway Children has been fighting for children alone and at risk on the streets for over 22 years. During that time, they have reached more than 275,000 children in India, the UK and East Africa. They run away or are forced to leave home, where they suffer poverty, violence, abuse and neglect. They find themselves living on the streets because there is nowhere else to and no one left to turn to. The problems they face on the streets are often even worse than those they endured at home. Every day Railway Children fights to change their story.
But there's still so much more to do. Millions of children still live alone on the streets where they suffer abuse and exploitation. In the UK, society often denies their existence, and in other countries the problem is so prevalent that it has become ‘normal’.
Railway Children race to reach children as soon as they arrive on the streets and intervene before an abuser can. Their pioneering work enables them to get to street children before the streets get to them.
How money changes lives:
The global pandemic has had an impact on every single one of us, and them as a charity have had to adapt and find new ways to raise money as well as new approaches to reaching the children that need them.
Thanks to their supporters, Railway Children were able to reach and protect 15,822 vulnerable children last year.
Together they have changed those children's lives and have given them hope and a future.
Railway Children's aim is to continue to make our donations work as hard as possible which is why they try to keep costs down, work efficiently and make each pound go as far as possible.
Last year 80% of their income was spent on charitable work.
