The enormous explosion that leveled parts of Beirut, Lebanon, on Tuesday, August 4, killed at least 137 people and injured more than 4,000 others, overwhelming the authorities and damaging many hospitals and critical facilities.
With an already weak health system struggling to cope with the coronavirus pandemic, hospitals in Beirut are now overwhelmed
in the wake of the massive explosion.
The British Red Cross is working closely with the Lebanese Red Cross, which has been at the heart of the response. The immediate focus is on saving lives.
The money raised will help the relief work on the ground being provided by the Lebanese Red Cross, which is responding to this emergency. In the unlikely event that the British Red Cross raises more money than can be reasonably and efficiently spent in Lebanon, any surplus funds will be used to help them prepare for and respond to other disasters / emergencies worldwide.
