Clipper Round the World Race, 30 August 2015
We fund research and provide support to children and adults affected by cancer

Story

Since joining the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in
October 2015, we have sailed 20,000 miles, racing through the World’s oceans. This journey included;

  • Capetown to Australia (Southern Ocean/Roaring
    Forties)
  • 2,000 miles around Australia
  • The iconic Sydney to Hobart Race
  • Through the Panama Canal and Caribbean Sea to
    New York
  • Atlantic Crossing to Derry, Northern Ireland
  • Derry to Den Helder in Holland via North Sea
  • Finished in London July 2016.

This once in a lifetime adventure was full of water, wind,
fun, hard work, fatigue and some great sailing. And it was all for a fantastic cause.

What added real value to the adventure for me was using the
experience to help other people by raising funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

Did you know?

  • One in two of us is likely to have a cancer experience during our lives
  • Around 40,000 people in Ireland will be diagnosed with some form of cancer this year, and will need support through their experience
  • Survival rates for all cancers are improving steadily, and there are now over 150,000 cancer survivors in Ireland
  • Around 40% of cancers are preventable through lifestyle changes such as taking more exercise, reducing obesity, reducing alcohol intake, and, most of all, eliminating the scourge of tobacco.
  • Treatment services in Ireland are now among the most advanced in the world, but much more needs to be done to improve diagnostic facilities, cancer prevention measures, providing help and care during treatment, and after-treatment supports.
  • Extensive cancer research programmes in Irish universities and hospitals are world standard, and are helping to improve survival rates and quality of treatment and care for Irish people.

The Irish Cancer Society helps thousands of people every
year through:

  • Providing information and support services for people dealing with cancer (Cancer Help Lines, Daffodil Centres in hospitals, information packs, counselling etc)
  • Promoting cancer prevention and health-enhancing
    programmes
  • Providing a nationwide home night nursing service for people in end-of-life situations
  • Advocating on behalf of cancer patients to enable all cancer services in Ireland to be world leading
  • Championing the cause of cancer patients, overcoming health inequalities, providing community-based cancer supports
  • Promoting and investing in cancer research to
advance Ireland's capability to reduce cancer incidence and improve survival prospects

And all of this is done without funding from Government.  We rely on public donations to deliver our services, and the need is increasing all the time.  Any help you can offer will help
many, many people, and will be much appreciated.
