Story
Last November just after the last Great North Run two of my close friends at church Bob and Brian suffered heart problems. Sadly, Bob (my dear mentor/tutor) did not survive a series of setbacks after his operation. It was Bob that always got excited about being the messenger to take my race time/position and announce same year on year to the congregation at the evening service back in Hartlip. The day of the GNR will remind us just how much we miss our friend. The good news is that Brian has recovered and is receiving ongoing great care.
Heart disease has robbed me of four dear members of my family too over the years - including my Geordie dad Frank when I was just 15 (This is a reason I love going to the NE & crossing the Tyne Bridge on the run).
So this year I have no hesitation in supporting the British Heart Foundation for the second year running as they do such great work in trying to prevent and advance the cure for heart disease.
Consequently, I dedicate my run to Frank, Mary, Rosemary, Vera, Bob and Brian.
