Story
Today, many will be dealing with a devastating prognoses, that they or their loved one has a brain tumour. It will stop them in their tracks, it will change their world.
Brain Tumours are more prevalent between the age of 7 to 45. They can be there growing for years, or they can grow aggressively.
This young girl didn’t know that she had a tumour growing inside her head.
She didn’t know that she would have an operation that would take away the tumour and part of her skull, leaving a hole bigger than a golf ball but smaller than a tennis bal.
That she would undergo radium and other treatments at St Luke’s Hospital, it is a cancer hospital. She knew that because that is where her granny went to.
That she would miss almost two years of proper school.
That her hair wouldn’t grow for the next year.
She didn’t know what the future would be, if she had a future!
This is a photo of me, aged 11.
I survived and I thrived. Today, I am the proud Mum of 4 amazing young men. I have a career and job that I love. I have wonderful family and friends. I am one of the lucky ones.
In 2019, another tumour was diagnosed, but this time it is benign, it is growing slowly, it won’t be operated on, for now.
It stopped me in my tracks. It made me remember that 12 year old girl that didn’t; understand what was happening. But one day I woke up and realised, I am a survivor and life is for living and for giving. This time It Is Benign.. It causes some discomfort and pain, but this can be managed without impacting my ability to live a full life.
So many more people now do survive but more help is needed for research into diagnosis and treatments. For many others, they are not so blessed and each day as they face their treatment not knowing if they will or if their child will survive. It becomes a bigger struggle, and this is where you come in; please help me to raise as much as possible on 31st March for Brain Tumour research.. Please donate and please wear a hat.
As my Dad would have said; If you want to get ahead, get a hat.
Thank you very much and please share this with your friends, family and work colleagues
