Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Pawprints Wildlife Rescue, incorporating Wirral Fox Rescue offers urgent care, rehabilitation & release for a variety of wildlife namely hedgehogs, foxes & other small mammals. I have been a volunteer for the charity almost 5 years and my aim is to raise £2,000 to support the phenomenal work carried out by a team of dedicated individuals on a daily basis.

As you can imagine, veterinary bills are a constant outlay together with the essentials; food, medication, equipment and the general running costs for the Hoggery in Hoylake and our Charity Shop in New Ferry. A typical monthly expenditure can be upwards of £4,000 which is a constant worry.

On the 4th November 2022 I will begin this self-funded journey to Peru to undertake the Inca Trail at Machu Picchu. Over 4 days I will walk a total of 40 kilometers at an altitude of 13,829 feet above sea level!  No doubt this experience will be the most difficult challenge for me yet.

After undergoing spinal fusion surgery in 2016, I have lived with constant back pain so a physical challenge such as this has always been unimaginable. However my philosophy in life is never say never, that’s why I want to use my compassion, determination and grit to succeed and make a difference to the wildlife we care for.  My love of animals has been the catalyst to help a charity close to my heart and so I make a plea to friends, family and beyond.  I realise times are difficult but if you can spare any cash, no matter how small, to sponsor my epic journey in helping give Pawprints and the Fox Rescue a much-needed boost I will be so grateful.

I will share with you the highs and lows, if any, of this epic challenge!

Thank you in anticipation!

Dee

About the charity

Pawprints is a wildlife charity providing high quality, animal-focused wildlife rescue and rehabilitation in Wirral and the surrounding area. Initially, the focus of our activities is hedgehogs as this is where the current expertise of the staff and volunteers lies. Through partnerships with other organisations, we will provide wider support for wildlife in need, and over time we will look to develop our own expertise through appropriate training. We are, very clear that we will only work with animals where we have the appropriate knowledge and experience. We will take in, and care for, sick or injured hedgehogs, or those who are generally struggling to survive in the wild; for example, underweight or dehydrated juveniles, or abandoned hoglets. The primary aim will be to treat and care for these hedgehogs to get them back into their natural habitat as soon as they are able to thrive unaided. We recognise that, as wild creatures, minimal intervention is best. Hedgehogs will receive appropriate medication (as prescribed by a vet) and be fed and kept clean and warm, with a focus on disease management and infection control, until they are healthy and of an appropriate size to be released. We believe that a key role is to raise awareness and educate the public, of all ages, about the current plight of UK wildlife and what they can do to help. We operate an open-door policy so that anyone can drop in or call us if they need advice.
