Story
I'm so excited to be running the 2024 London Marathon, raising funds for the Royal National Institute for Deaf People - in honor of my son!
Iain was diagnosed with severe hearing loss in 2022 at age 15. This came to us as a complete shock. We had no idea that he had hearing loss, but looking back, it explains his struggles in school and social settings. Doctors have not found the reason for his deafness despite lots of imaging and genetic testing.
He had no idea what he was missing with his hearing loss. When he first got his hearing aids, on the drive home, he asked "Is this what a car sounds like?" I will never forget that moment. And now, thanks to fantastic support from his audiology and medical team, he is thriving.
Though I live in the US, I am running the London Marathon in support of this great charity because I know that somewhere in the UK, there is a teenage boy, just like Iain, needing support on his journey through hearing loss. The Royal National Institute for Deaf People provides support for 12 million deaf people living in the UK, focusing on inclusion, health, employment and research.
I am on my 6-star journey with the goal of completing all the world major marathons by the time I turn 60. I'm 54 and have run Boston, New York and Berlin. London 2024 will be my 4th Star, leaving Chicago and Tokyo left to complete. I started running at age 40, having never done anything athletic. Running has given me confidence, friendship and the ability to overcome any obstacle in my way.
I'm thrilled to be running London for RNID in honor of my son! Thank you for your support.
