Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
2017 is a big year for me as I reach the grand age of 45 in May! I wanted to do something significant that would challenge me personally, but also make a difference and help others less fortunate.
My Nan was a very special person in my life who sadly passed away in October 2014. She was unique and a 'one-off' who touched everyone she met with her humour and 'direct' questions. Nan loved to laugh and would look for every opportunity to find the fun in life.
Nan suffered with her first stroke in 1992 at 65 but was to have two more attacks before she eventually passed in 2014. Despite these she never lost her good humour and attitude to life, always telling us to 'Be Nice to One Another' and that 'What makes you bad, makes you better' - I am hoping the last one will work out after completing the marathon training!
Every year there are about 152,000 strokes in the UK. Thanks to improvements to stroke care you are twice as likely to survive a stroke than 20 years ago, however stroke remains the fourth single largest cause of death in the UK.
Stroke is one of the greatest health challenges of our time but doesn’t get the attention or funding it deserves - especially compared to cancer and heart disease. If I can make a small difference by helping to raise money for this worthy charity, then that would be a great achievement, and I am sure my Nan would be looking down proud of her legacy.
At the Stroke Association they believe that strokes can and should be prevented. They are for life after stroke and my Nan was all for living life to the full despite the limitations the strokes brought.
