Story

Marathon Coastal Trek – Monday 16th September 2019 👣

Team TouCan (Two Can do this!): Debi Devine and Laura Chowdhury (who weren’t the most athletic of people when they attempted the half marathon back in 2018 as part of ‘Team Will’ and are possibly even less so this time round!)

Challenge: Marathon 26.2 mile trek – From Old Colwyn to Llandudno Pier, across to West Shore, along the dunes to Conwy Quay,  around the bend to Ysgol Aberconwy……… and back again!

Raising funds for:  The Glan Clwyd Audiology Voluntary Support Service – ‘Hearing Aid’  (Charity Reg No 1041591)

Debi’s Story: On New Year’s Eve 2019 I will be celebrating 5 years in remission! Some time ago, in one of my more wildly positive moments, I had decided I would like to mark the occasion by completing a Marathon walk around the coastline that had played such a huge part in my recovery.

It’s a huge thing – hitting the big 5 years! No words! But an abundance of emotions! And I intend to fully embrace and relish every single liberating step of this trek! (but don't quote that back to me if you meet me along the way!)

Last year Laura and I completed a half marathon walk, as part of ‘Team Will’ – it was early on during that adventure that I suggested to Laura that she might like to join me too – to raise further funds for our local Audiology Volunteer Drop in Service. Imagine my surprise when she agreed! 😃

Laura’s Story: I’m an idiot & I don’t want to do this! I thought Debi was joking …….. apparently she wasn’t! So here goes …………

Why are we raising more funds for the Audiology Drop-in Service?

Back in 2018, as part of ‘Team Will’, we wrote:

'If you know anyone with a hearing loss you’ll know how isolating it can be at times – especially if they experience problems with their hearing aids and are unable to get to their local hospital for assistance.

The volunteer led drop-in service provides a friendly, non-establishment presence for hearing aid users and their families, friends & carers, who often find it difficult to access Audiology services. The service also provides practical and social support within a relaxed and informal environment.

We now need to raise funds to allow us to hire more community spaces to enable a broader geographical reach across the Central North Wales area.’

With the money ‘Team Will’ raised from our half marathon in 2018 we have been able to realise our goal, now hosting drop-in clinics at 8 sites over three counties.

And they have all, without exception, been very warmly and positively received. All 8 clinics continue to go from strength to strength and our volunteer numbers are steadily rising.

Volunteers and patients frequently report the drop-in clinics are so much more than a place to have hearing aids serviced  a place to find companionship, support, a warm welcome, a cup of tea and even, in some cases, a free slice of delicious home-made cake!

So if you are reading this and very kindly donated in 2018…………… thank you so much for helping to make all this possible! 🙏

And can we now respectfully ask that you dig deep yet again and help us to raise more funds. 💷

Funds to allow the continued success and growth of the existing clinics and also to enable us develop a team of trained volunteers to help us to expand the drop-in service to includeon site drop-ins’ in Nursing Homes, Residential Homes, Care Homes and Assisted Living and Independent Living accommodation across the Central North Wales area.

Our volunteers are just brilliant – so grateful to them all! 👏

We need your help – please do consider showing your support. We continue to be immensely grateful for every donation – every penny really does count!

Very many thanks for taking the time to read our story and for your continued support.

 Team TouCan (& will! 😊)
