Kilimanjaro 2010
Nigel and Debbie have decided to make a dream of theirs come true at the same time as trying to raise much needed funds for a great charity, Cancer Research UK. Cancer is something that touches us all. It can be destructive and soul destroying seeing a loved one in pain or undergoing painful treatments whilst fighting this terrible disease. Charities such as this are trying to find a cure as well as providing invaluable support to patients and their families when they need it most.
After we had decided to undertake this challenge, our friend, Miriam, sadly lost her battle with breast cancer leaving a husband, Murray, and two young daughters, Phoebe and Skye. Miriam and Murray enjoyed and succeeded in this challenge several years ago and we hope to honour her memory by doing the same. She was very excited and supportive about our trip when she was alive and shared her photos with us. I think she would be honoured that we are dedicating our trip and fund raising to her name.
We are fully funding this trip ourselves. The charity will not contribute a penny. Therefore 100% of the funds raised will go to them for their essential work in fighting cancer.
We are travelling to Kenya, then Tanzania in February 2010 to walk up (and back down hopefully) Kilimanjaro in 6 days. We have chosen the Rongai route as it has the extra day (to 6) to acclimatise, because the biggest challenge (as well as walking 22 miles up or down a 6,000m/19,000 ft high mountain) is the altitude sickness. We cannot really train for that, although we are trying to train for the walk itself. We are quite fit generally and hope that will help us in this challenge. We have already agreed that if one of us cannot get to Uhuru peak, then the other is to try on their own.
Please dig deep to help this charity, even if you do not know us, but knew and loved Miriam. Thank you.
