Blenheim Triathlon 2011 · 4 June 2011 ·
Where does the time go?! It can’t surely be a year since I got talked into doing a team triathlon and here I am doing it all again! Well, for those of you who supported Stu, Rhian and I last time, we’d really appreciate it if you’d do it again. The cause remains the same - the Alzheimer’s Society.
As many of you will know, my Gran was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s 4 years ago and as every day goes by the Alzheimer’s limits her freedom and dignity a little bit more. The Alzheimer's Society is the UK's leading care and research charity for people with dementia and those who care for them. Through their research programme The Alzheimer’s Society work to improve the knowledge we have about dementia and its treatment - and are pursuing the ultimate goal of finding a cure. The government invests eight times less in dementia research than cancer research and the illness generally gets a lot less attention, which was why we thought we’d continue our support this year.
There are apparently 750,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to one million by 2025. The statistics show that 1 in 3 of us will suffer from some form of dementia before we die. That becomes a very scary thought when you see first-hand as I have what it can do to someone and how the lack of awareness about the illness can impact on how people respond to those who are suffering.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it's the most efficient way to donate - we raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
If you are able to donate and support our chosen cause that would be great and if you want to find out more about dementia or the Alzheimer’s Society then please follow the link: http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/
Last year we raised £789 including Gift Aid. Thanks to our anonymous donor you can see we are already on our way to beating that plus the same donor is going to match all further sponorship we raise so with your help we'll really be able to make a difference.
Thanks lots!
