Story
Friends and family...please help me on my journey! I have joined a virtual training group with South Shore Health in preparation to run my first ever 5k event. I am not a runner, in fact, I really do not enjoy running. However, I am challenging myself to come out of my comfort zone and try something new. This journey is not only for personal achievement but a way to honor the memory of two nephews who fell victim to substance abuse. In 2001, my sister Nancy passed away after a 3 year battle with pancreatic cancer. She left behind a devoted husband and 3 young boys whom she loved very much and worried about constantly. As with many families, the mother is the glue that keeps things together. Each of her boys were special in their own way and she knew it. But she also knew that, at times, the younger two needed a watchful eye. It was difficult and heart breaking when I learned about their involvement with substance abuse. I just did not understand. How could they make this choice...how would their mom feel if she was still alive and knew what they were doing??. In the beginning, our family tried to offer help and support. But as time went on, it became too difficult for me personally as I had my own young family to care for. As a sister and an aunt, I always carried the guilt that I should have done more to help them. However, as time went on I came to realize it was not my battle to fight, it was theirs. Substance abuse can happen to anyone...it does not care what color, race, ethnicity or how much money you make...it affects not only the person but the entire family. So I humbly ask, please consider making a donation to my cause and journey. Any donation is much appreciated.
With gratitude,
Doreen
