Story
I’ll be taking part in a 40km sprint cycle around Dorney Lake on October 1st in aid of Diabetes UK.
Why Diabetes UK and not NRAS like normal? Back in June a fairly standard doctors visit resulted in a few tests which resulted in some alarming results, one of which after some more tests meant I’m showing signs of becoming diabetic – the actual term being ‘pre-diabetes’. What’s pre-diabetes? It’s your body having higher than normal levels of glucose in your blood, but not at levels that would be classed as diabetes.
So a bit of a shock! I’ve made some pretty big changes to my lifestyle – what I eat, what I drink and how often. I also aim to exercise on a much more frequent basis and have some strong support to make sure I do so. So far I’ve lost over two stone in weight and aim to lose another five. Whilst I have to go back for more tests soon and the diagnosis may end up with a formal diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, I’m giving myself every chance to turn it around.
I’m not trying to raise stupid amounts of cash – although some would be nice - I’m not pushing myself to mad distances like before. So, why am I getting back on the bike? Because I miss it (I’ve had an injury, too) and to raise awareness of diabetes.
If you’re concerned about diabetes, for f*** sake, talk to your GP and do something about it. Untreated, it’s serious stuff and it’s a nationwide problem – it’s currently accountable for 10% of the NHS budget and that figure is rising.
As ever, Vodafone will fundmatch the first £350 I raise, so please contribute if you can.
