Story

I am 24788845 L/Cpl Ray ( RED ) Chapman I joined the guards depot Pirbright in 1986, I joined the 1st battalion in oxford barracks, Munster, Germany in 1987. I was promoted to L/Cpl in 1989, I took part in training exercises in Canada, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Brunei & Malaysia. I served in the 1st gulf war in Iraq, liberating Kuwait & Saudi Arabia. In 1991 the 1st battalion moved to wellington barracks London to carry out public duties. I took part in the trooping of the colour in 1992 & carried out guard duties of Buckingham palace, Windsor castle, St james palace & the tower of London. I left the regiment in 1993.

I first met Darren Chant in Pirbright guards depot, where we both were picked to represent the depot cross country team, we then met in Munster Germany. We both represented to 1st battalion cross country team & the Regiments football team. Darren was a fantastic team player & was one of the strongest & fittest men I had the pleasure of serving with. It was no surprise that Darren was promoted right to the very top & becoming the Regimental Sgt Major. Darren was a great character & a winner. It was with great sadness to hear the news of the sad loss of Darren & colleagues in 2009 in Afghanistan. So in memory of Darren Chant & the other Grenadier brothers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, it will be a great honour to participate in the Darren Chant memorial football trophy, raising funds for THE COLONIALS FUND. This fund is there to help Grenadiers returning from conflicts with physical & mental injuries & also the families of these true hero's.
