June Hackney joined the angels on 22 May after a 3 year battle with a Brain Tumour. June was one of my closest friends, my cousin and most importantly my rock. I was privileged to have been part of 'Team Hackney' helping look after June. Marie Curie provided night nurses a couple of times a week during the last few months allowing us to get a decent nights sleep whilst caring for June.
On 1 January 2015, I started a 7 month training schedule in order to be able to compete in the Nottingham Outlaw Ironman distance triathlon taking place on Sunday, 26 July. To date (28 Jun) I have swam 6072 lengths, cycled 2017 miles and ran 616 miles in order to prepare for this event which consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 114 mile cycle and a 26 mile run, all of which has to be completed within 16 hours.
The triathlon is going to hurt but nothing can compare to what June went through with radiotherapy, chemotherapy and other treatment which she endured without complaint for the last couple of years. Right up until the end June always kept her sense of humour and she is, and always will, remain an inspiration to me. I miss her.
Please give generously, the cost of a night nurse is £180 per night giving families a chance to catch up on their rest in order to maintain day to day care with patience and love.
Donations from June's funeral have been made to Macmillan Cancer Support, St Johns Hospice and Brain Tumour research.
