Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Due to injury I have transferred my registration to the York 10K on 4th August 2013.
Why I'm Fundraising
In November 2011 dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. Before he was diagnosed I had always thought he was indestructible, but hearing the word "cancer" struck me with fear and dread of what the coming months might bring.
Anyone who knows my dad won't be surprised to learn he took the news in his stride. He was determined not to "roll over" and made the decision to postpone his 80th Birthday until after he had completed his treatment.
January 2012 saw the start of his chemotherapy, and with it, several admissions into hospital because he was so poorly. By March he had started radiotherapy which meant daily trips to hospital. Mam was with him every step of the way. They were both worn out, but the determination to make the treatment worthwhile never waned.
Dad's treatment finished in May 2012 and in June 2012 he was told the cancer had not spread (and possibly slightly reduced). This was the best news we could have hoped for.
As the weeks went by Dad began to build himself back up (he'd lost 4 stones in weight). A well earned holiday in late August was just the tonic both Mam and Dad needed, and in September 2012, Dad finally got to celebrate his 80th birthday (9months late!).
He has since celebrated his 81st birthday (he's now cramming them in!!!) and together Mam and Dad have celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversay with family and friends.
Watching Dad couragiously battle this illness fills me with so much admiration for him.
What I'm doing to earn your much appreciated sponsorship
Unlike my husband Andy, who regularly runs 30 miles a week, running is definately not something I do!! So deciding to run Jane Tomlinson's 10K Run For All is a big challenge for me! Most people who know me, however, are usually quick to point out my stubborness and determination, so with that in mind, I'm reasonably confident in my ability to do this.
Why I've Chosen Macmillan Cancer Support
Today, 2 million people are living with cancer in the UK, and around 300,000 new cases are diagnosed every year. More than one in three of us will get cancer at some stage in our lives, so it really does affect us all.
The Macmillan Team were there from day one of Dad being diagnosed. Their support hasn't been reserved for Dad alone. They have supported and continue to support the family.
How will your donation help?
£100 could mean that the Macmillan Support Line would be able to help people affected by cancer claim £2,691 in the benefits they're entitled to.
£156 could run the Macmillan Support Line for an hour, providing an average of 13 people with essential information and support.
£350 could pay for a much-needed convalescent break for someone with cancer and their carer.
£918 could fund a Macmillan nurse for a working week.
£2,026 could fund a Macmillan rehabilitation support team for a week, providing a range of services, including physiotherapy and diet advice, to people with cancer.
What does your support mean to me?
Quite simply -it means everything to me!
I know times are hard and we are all feeling the pinch. Every donation is heartfelt and equally important to me no matter how big or small.
