We support individuals and families to help improve their lives and wellbeing
Story
Hi everyone.
My name is Dave Cotterill and I work for HMRC, Learning & Leadership Development based in Liverpool. I’m 45, married to Ann and am the proud Dad of Bethany, Lydia and Eleanor.
On Saturday 13 June 2009, I’m going to walk from the Pier Head in Liverpool and along the coast to Southport Pier, a distance of approximately 22 miles.
I’ve completed this walk once before, and I can remember only too well that that it was tough and a real challenge. This time I want to use the event to raise money for a very special and worthwhile charity I want to tell you about. It’s called the ‘Walking With Giants Foundation’.
WWGF is a national charity based in Merseyside. It was set up to help support individuals who are affected by an extremely rare genetic disorder called Majewski Osteodysplastic Primordial Dwarfism Type II, and other forms of proportionate short stature.
Some individuals affected by Primoridal Dwarfism are classed as the smallest people in the world, especially the MOPDII sub-type. In the UK there are six known diagnosed individuals with MOPDII, the smallest being 2ft tall and aged five. Many individuals affected by the condition don't grow taller than 3 feet 3 inches.
However there are 17 individuals that the WWGF is helping, many are awaiting a formal diagnosis, but their lives are being made more rewarding with the help of the WWGF.
Some of the areas that the WWGF help with are:
• Facilitate Research (Internally and when the need arises medically).
• Professional Advice (independent medical and legal).
• When necessary, send families to America to meet experts or for treatment.
• When necessary, send families to America to meet other families and individuals affected by Primordial Dwarfism as part of an educational awareness program.
• Produce education and awareness literature.
• Family support meetings.
• Short breaks.
• Annual Conventions.
• Day trips (theatre, specialised play centres, zoo, during Annual Convention).
• Fund specialist equipment and toys.
• Custom made clothes, play costumes and furniture.
• Provide necessary provisions to help parents cope with the day-to-day issues they face (for example, driving lessons, training, counselling).
You can find out more about WWGF by visiting their website www.walkingwithgiants.org or you can find out more about Alex Connerty - a lovely and very special boy who is diagnosed as having MOPDII - by visiting his website www.alex-connerty.co.uk
So...please will you sponsor me and, in doing so, help to make a difference to those affected by all the sub-types of Primordial Dwarfism.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me. Walking With Giants Foundation gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
Thanks everyone.
Dave Cotterill
PS Why don’t you call me on the day of the walk? I could do with your support and hearing your voice will keep me going. My mob. no. is 077353 85955.
