For some reason over a pint and a footy game me and three of my mates decided we'd sign up and run a half marathon! Not just any half marathon either, the Great North Run - we've earmarked it as a "bit of exercise" around a lads weekend in Newcastle!

With everybody awash with requests for charity donations these days, I am a little loathed to put a price tag on this run but if I can make a small difference to my chosen charity that would be great. I'm running for a local North London cause, The Whittington Hospital Charitable Funds. In particular, the Gastroenterology Department.

I am sure that many of my nearest and dearest have frequented this place once or twice in their lifetime and if not, have heard of it because of the legacy it has left me with. My wife, Mum and father-in-law all owe their lives to the hard work and dedication of the staff at this hospital.

It is my wife, Holly, whose story I run for. From 2007 onwards, Holly has been in the care of several departments whilst she battled with Ulcerative Colitis, from diagnosis to major corrective surgery which saved her life.

The men and women who look after Holly to this day are like our extended family; they know us all far too well and in the best and worst moments. Holly has repaid them by getting back on her feet - working, travelling, marrying me and recently becoming a Mum to our daughter (delivered at The Whittington funnily enough!), as well as previously being a patient volunteer.
