Story
Hi!
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit our fundraising page, we really appreciate it.
What are we doing?
On 26th June 2021 we will hike the Yorkshire Three Peaks with the aim of raising £1000 for the Alzheimer's Society, a very worthy cause that is personal to our family.
The Yorkshire Three Peaks consists of the mountains of Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent. Our hike will cover a distance of over 26 miles with over 5200ft of ascent and descent. It's a challenge that will be tough, but we are very excited about completing it together.
Why are we doing it?
The national lockdowns imposed due to the Covid pandemic have had a particularly challenging impact on people with dementia and their carers. So, we wanted to do something challenging ourselves that will benefit one of the charities that help these individuals and families.
- There are currently around 850,000 people with dementia in the UK. This is projected to rise to 1.6 million by 2040
- 209,600 will develop dementia this year, that’s one person every three minutes
- There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease or any other type of dementia
- Dementia research is desperately underfunded. For every person living with dementia, the annual cost to the UK economy is over £30,000 and yet only £90 is spent on dementia research each year
- Unpaid carers supporting someone with dementia save the UK economy £13.9 billion a year
