Story
Thanks for visit ing my JustGiving page - updated with race report below:
I decided to run the scenic Lochaber Marathon in Scotland to help raise some funds for the wonderful work done by St. Catherine's Hospice. On the same day that over 40 St. Catherine's runners completed the Brighton Marathon, I was toeing the start line with only 200 other runners on the Shinty Field in Fort William. (the entry of nearly 500 was decimated by the Icelandic Volcano and the grounded flights, but I had travelled up on the Caledonian Sleeper train)
The Lochaber Marathon route runs alongside a loch with views of Ben Nevis and other snow-capped peaks. I really enjoyed the stunning scenery and reached the half marathon in around 1 hour 34 minutes, and maintained even pace until 17 miles, when I began slowing down. 20 miles was reached in 2:24, but at 23 miles instead of hitting "the wall" I hit the road - hard - by tripping over a traffic island. I ran the last 3 miles bleeding from grazes to both hands and knees and one hip, but soon got patched up at the finish. My final time was 3 hours 15 minutes 59 seconds, and I received a silver medal in the 60-64 age group of the British Masters championship (the 1st chap ran 3:11:30). A medicinal pint of Guinness soon revived me!
I really appreciate all your kind donations, thanks so much for your support. If you know of anyone who would like to help raise funds for St. Catherine's please direct them to my page.
