Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. As you can see, I’m taking part in the Chatelherault Country Park Miles for MacMillan fundraising walk with my daughters Ava & Sofia.

I’ve worked with MacMillan Cancer Support almost two years. In that time, I’ve seen first hand the incredible work we do, both in the West of Scotland, and also throughout the rest of the UK.

Macmillan Cancer Support

Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever face. But you don’t have to go through it alone. The Macmillan team is with you every step of the way, from the nurses and therapists helping you through treatment to the campaigners improving cancer. No one should face cancer alone, and with your support no one will.

For some examples of some of the people we have helped, have a look at the case studies page on the MacMillan website:

http://www.macmillan.org.uk/Aboutus/MediaCentre/Casestudies.aspx

We're proud to say that we are now reaching more and more people affected by cancer (a 15% growth over 2011 when we were reaching 4.9m people) and we think we are reaching nearly all people living with cancer in the UK who need our help.

However, it’s important to know that most of our current reach is through lower-level interactions such as through our website or through our information resources.

Although these services are great and can be just what some people need, we need more money to reach more people through our face-to-face and helpline services if we are to reach people in the way they need, at the times they need, in more impactful ways that really improve lives.

MacMillan in the West of Scotland

Every day a staggering 36 people in the West of Scotland hear the devastating news they have cancer. This will see the population of people living with cancer in the area rise by a massive 76% between 2010 and 2030 (from 85,103 in 2010 to 150,200 in 2030). This means that by 2030, the number of people living with or beyond cancer in the West of Scotland will be enough to fill Hampden Park nearly three times.

This huge increase will in turn result in thousands more local people feeling isolated and alone, every day, even after treatment ends. Macmillan and its supporters must take action now to make sure we’re there to solve these issues.

Overall in 2012:

·     Macmillan made 9.9 million interventions with people affected by cancer.

·      We supported 5.7 million people affected by cancer in the UK through at least one of our services – a 15% increase on 2011.

o   This 5.7 million includes:

§  1.9 million people with a cancer diagnosis

§  600,000 carers of people with cancer

§  3.2 million other people affected by cancer (including family, friends, colleagues, and worried well)

I’ve set a wee fundraising target of £50, but it would be great if we could raise £100!!

To give you an idea of what this could provide:

£100 could pay for a Macmillan Grant that buys fresh bedding for a person with cancer who is dealing with nausea, night sweats or incontinence because of their treatment.

£71 could help run a large Macmillan information and support centre for an hour.

£64 could keep a Macmillan information and support centre stocked with all the information resources it needs to support people affected by cancer for a week. These resources would include booklets, guides, directories and leaflets.

£60 could pay a health care professional to deliver a talk (for example, about symptom management) to a self-help and support group.

£50 could pay for 96 copies of The cancer guide. This Macmillan booklet can help someone recently diagnosed with cancer, and their families, understand more about cancer, its treatment and the help available.

£40 could help a cancer self-help and support group hold their first meeting.

£30 could pay for a member of a self-help and support group member to travel to a national networking event
