Story
Postpartum Psychosis is a mental illness which affects 1 to 2 in every 1000 mothers, yet few people have ever even heard of it. An episode of psychosis is very frightening for mothers and their families. Episodes begin suddenly after childbirth and symptoms include hallucinations and delusions, often with mania, depression and confusion.
My mother, Flora Mervin suffered all these symptoms and was hospitalised a few weeks after my birth, where she remained until her death ten years later. In that era, postpartum psychosis was incurable whereas these days most women do recover. On the other hand, many women suffering with mental health problems are not identified or treated and suicide is the second leading cause of death in postpartum women. By raising some money for APP I hope to make a small contribution to the elimination of the stigma, fear, misinformation, and the lack of awareness regarding this terrible illness.
