Story
We need your urgent support this spring to help transform the lives of patients & their families.I'm taking part in the 150km Your Way challenge and raising vital funds for the essential & life-saving work that happens in CHI at Crumlin every minute of every day.
Amy was born 18 March 2020.Amy was born with a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.{CDH}.Amys stomach had pushed up into her chest area which put a lot of pressure on her lung and heart which gave them very little room to develop. This was discovered at her 20 week scan and a plan was put in place for when she was born.
Amy was born under the care of the Rotunda hospital and transferred immediately to PICU in Crumlin by ambulance.
Amys condition meant there was no crying,no sound .We were told that she might not be able to breath on her own. This turned out to be the case and the doctors and nurses worked through the night to save Amys life.
Amys condition deteriorated so much she had to be placed on ECMO.ECMO is a form of life support. We were told before her birth that this could happen ,but nothing could prepare you for this.ECMO involves a tube been inserted into a large vein through the neck.
Amy still needed surgery to repair the hole in her diaphragm and after 12 days she was deemed strong enough to receive the surgery .The surgery seemed as if it lasted a life time but finally Amy was brought back to intensive care. The surgeon spoke to us and seemed very happy with how she was doing. The next 2-3 weeks were spent under the care of the amazing doctors and nurses in PICU.Amy exceeded the expectations of everyone and left intensive care and spent a few weeks on the ward.
Finally,we were told Amy was strong enough that we could take her home. She still has challenges ,but whatever is thrown at her, she stands up to it .
Amy is 1 year old on the 18th of March, and what a year it has been .She has been through a lot and still amazes us.Doctors use words like amazing and superhero to describe her.
There is a lot of super hero kids in Crumlin right now.We know first hand how tough it is starting off a journey like this.
I appeal for your support and generosity so that Crumlin can continue to gave first class treatment too babies like Amy.
