Fundraising for Yeovil Hospital Charity
Story
This is Jess. She is a critical care nurse in a major London hospital, and one of my friends.
This is her life:
Rudolph (my red nose!) is here to stay. And so is COVID. The hospitals are swamped again. Honestly, today I nursed 6 level 3 critically ill patients with little support. Two were proned and on a ventilator. Four were on high amounts of sedation, and one was suffering from ICU delirium, but even being on 4 different sedative infusions at high doses had little effect. He wanted to pull his tube out - all I could do is stand by his bedside to hold his hands and remind him why he shouldn’t do that. All the patients had oxygen requirements that were more than 45%. None of them were doing well with that much oxygen. They all had thick, sticky secretions. Some had swollen lips and eyes from being proned when the fluid moved down into their face. They all had diarrhoea. Two patients had their husbands in hospital and I received a call in the evening to tell me that one of their daughters was very sick in A&E and being admitted at that moment too.
This moved me very deeply, but I’m sure this is not an unusual story.
I know many of you would love to show your deep appreciation to all those who work so tirelessly meeting the relentless and gruelling demands of ICUs.
