CMV (or cytomegalovirus) is a common virus which can infect people of all ages, usually with no symptoms and no long-term effects. However, it can be dangerous if a pregnant woman catches CMV and passes it to her unborn baby. CMV is the leading cause of birth defects in the UK and damages 2-3 babies every day, yet few people have even heard of it. Responsible for 25% of childhood hearing loss it can cause other disabilities such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy, physical impairment, behavioural and learning difficulties.
CMV is a parent-led charity aiming to raise awareness of CMV amongst medical professionals and the public, including the simple hygiene precautions that can effectively manage risk of infection. Find out more at www.cmvaction.org.uk.
