Story

We are at it again! PLEASE SEE justgiving/davelovelady2016 for hte latest adventure...

Hi all !  My 10th anniversary of having my 2 bone-marrow stem-cell transplants has been and gone, and I am still here, but still not tempting fate by saying too much,I don't want to fall off the perch by being too cocky!!   My wife Jan and  I have been very lucky to win a free holiday to a hotel we went to a couple of years ago called the Sis Pins in Puerta Polenca, Majorca. Word got about about this bit of luck and the timing being just after my tenth year of survival ! I hit the front page of the Advertiser to-day (12th April) and Radio Merseyside have invited me onto their breakfast show next wednesday (18th April) morning about 8-30am ish! to have a chat about Myeloma and winning the holiday.    Of course my main aim is to raise awareness of myeloma and hopefully raise as much money for myeloma  charity as possible !!!!  If you do read the article with the very hansome chap on the front of this weeks Advertiser,I apoligise if it upsets your stomache because it is a bit soppy !!!       PLEASE PLEASE FIND IT IN YOUR HEARTS TO  DONATE SOME MONEY TO THIS CAUSE AND LET'S TRY TO FIND A WAY TO ERADICATE THIS EVIL DESEASE........THANK YOU IN ADVANCE AND KEEP HEALTHY YOURSELVES !!       Just in case anyone has forgotten how my fundraising started, here is a summary.................On Saturday the 26th of June 2010 I drove my mobility scooter from Ormskirk to Southport (10 miles) in support of MyelomaUK. My family, dog and friends walked with me the whole way.  We collected as much money for the wonderful charity  MYELOMA UK. as we could. I have not had the chance or energy to finally count the total amount yet but as a guesstimate it looks like we have raised about £2300 from this site ,sponsorship and the street collections. I was completely blown away by the generosity shown by "joe public",even people stopping their cars and donating money,I can't thank you all enough. I even had a donation of £100 from a local councillor,I wont embarass them by revealing their name! I will let you all know the final total asap, money is still coming in from people who have been away.                It may be of interest to you to read The Times on a Saturday soon about a mobility scooter ride I have recently done in Yorkshire to raise awarenes of the needs of more access  for disabled people and it will hopefully highlight Myeloma UK again ( you can't have too much publicity!!)        For those of you who are not sure of my story it is as follows:           In 2000 while working as a mechanical fitter I had an accident when an electric grinder cut into my chest.    After many x-rays it was found that I had some lesions on my bones, later in November 2000 I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, for which,at the moment there is no cure.    You could say that I was lucky (I think I am ! ) to find Myeloma early .         Some of the medics call it the " disease" because the word "cancer" is a horrible word, but that is what it is; Cancer of the plasma in the bones and blood.          So,after a course of extremely heavy chemotherapy, in April 2001 I had my first bone-marrow stem-cell transplant using my own bone-marrow cells, which obviously still carried the cancer.    I had a short recovery period, then more chemotherapy, during which I had a seizure and fell out of bed, breaking my back in three places. Then in September 2001 I had my second transplant, this time using my sisters' bone marrow cells.          I was told to expect to live for four and a half years !    I am extremely mentally positive and push myself (too hard sometimes !)         But after all this there is no denying that Myeloma has stolen my middle age, I am fifty five now.     My wife (who has been very supportive through hard times) and I had made lots of plans for our middle-age, but these plans can not be carried out due to this horrible cancer.   PLEASE  Give generously to support this fantastic charity, not for me but maybe for you or your loved ones in the future.      PLEASE HELP  to find a cure and help improve the quality of life of future Myeloma sufferers.              THANK-YOU  all and be healthy !!........Regards.....Dave
