I am running marathons to help reshape expectations of blind people and for a stronger RNIB. Most recent finish line was London Marathon on 3 Oct 2021!
I was never an athlete. I'm a regular middle-age dad who enjoys crisps and beer. At first, dragging myself a few hundred yards was horrible. But, thanks to fantastic encouragement from family and friends, plus my amazing team of guide runners, I kept going and somehow ran further than I imagined possible, Eventually completing the New York City Marathon on 3 Nov 2019.
During the first Covid lockdown of 2020, 20% of blind people, Surveyed in the UK,reported food rationing due to limited access to supermarkets. Thanks to campaigning lead by RNIB and partners, my family along with other blind people, ultimately got access to priority supermarket Deliveries. But just think about that, in one of the largest economies in the world in 2020 people were food rationing? As blind people we need a strong RNIB. And as anyone can become blind at any time, we all need a strong RNIB. As a blind kid, I learned to read and write using braille books and tools from RNIB. I travel independently using a white cane supplied by RNIB, and benefit from tactile paving and audible pedestrian signals campaigned for by RNIB. As a parent, husband and tax payer I access money using talking cash machines and tactile bank notes designed in collaboration with RNIB. I can borrow a braille or talking book free of charge, read the full text of today’s newspapers, thanks to accessible library services provided by RNIB. This is just the start.
Blind children today need better access to braille and tactile literacy tools to maximise their prospects. Many blind people still need improved access to health information, voting, education and employment services. RNIB must do much more with less. RNIB has a vital role to play in breaking down barriers and equipping blind and partially sighted people with tools to become active contributors in our communities.
I'll do you a deal. I promise to be out training most days. I'll also self-fund transport, hotel, kit and everything else needed to make this thing happen. Please can you help me make RNIB better by donating what ever you can afford, and please share this page with your contacts?
