Story
From 21st-30th September 2018 I'll be taking part in ‘Cycle Zambia: Lusaka to Victoria Falls’, a challenging 480km, 5-day route over rough and remote terrain, in aid of Transaid.
I’ll be part of a team of 43 riders from across the transport & logistics industry, who have come together to raise money for Transaid’s programmes to improve access to healthcare and in road safety and driver training in sub-Saharan Africa.
The funds raised from Transaid’s Cycle Zambia challenge will benefit two major programmes. Projects in Zambia, Madagascar and Northern Nigeria to reduce infant and maternal mortality by improving access to essential healthcare by introducing emergency transport systems. A Professional Driver Training project in Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda and Malawi which improves the standard of driver training delivered to HGV, FLT and PSV drivers which will ultimately reduce deaths on the road.
Building on the success of the famous Cycle Ambulances to transport pregnant women to hospital, Transaid's emergency transport work is now through a partnership with the MMV (the Medicines for Malaria Venture) embarking on the MaMaZ Against Malaria programme focussing particularly on children in the Serenje district - an area where malaria prevalence is very high in children under 5, many of whom die from a lack of timely access to healthcare.
The two youtube video links demonstrate why this is such as worthy charity.
