In the weeks running up to Christmas 2015, my Dad and family were rocked, when Dad was diagnosed with Myeloma, a form of bone marrow cancer.
Aside from mild episodes of arthritis and the odd gout attack, Dad's 65 years had always been healthy and he's well recognised around Cheadle Hulme and beyond, as the outgoing, larger than life figurehead of our sizeable family. It's not often we'll be out and about in Cheadle Hulme, at Stockport Georgians FC, or Cheadle Hulme CC, when somebody doesn't ask how 'Big Phil' or 'Brock' is; the fact he's so well known and respected is testament to the man he is.
To say this news, detected following a seemingly innocuous blood test linked to arthritis, shocked us all is beyond understatement.
Initially it was tough to see Dad try to come to terms with the news and the treatment he undergoes on a day to day schedule. As the weeks have passed though, his undoubted bravery and strength have come to the fore, and he's back out watching us play football, wearing shorts in baltic conditions, winding my Mum up and shopping for half zip jumpers in Fat Face; it's good to see him back on good form, and both he and my Mum know we're all there to support them however we can.
As I push towards 37 and think back over nearly 4 decades, Dad has been an absolute rock throughout. He's advised and supported me through thick and thin, and was always my biggest fan and followed me around the North of the country when I was at the peak of my footballing powers. and continues to support me and offer genuine heartfelt advice as I hurtle towards 40, having recently become a Dad for the first time myself. I know my 5 siblings, Mike Ste Ali Lou and Andy feel just the same, and I know that Dad has always done, and always will do, everything he can to support us and look after us no matter what life throws at us.
It's time we reversed the trend and looked after him a bit! Hopefully taking part in the run will show our support in helping Myeloma UK continue their extensive work and research into treatment for the bone marrow cancer, and hopefully the fact we're all doing this together shows the strength and togetherness that Dad has harnessed in us as brothers and sisters throughout our lives.
Thank you for taking the time to have a look at our page. Any donations you make would be hugely appreciated, and for your support both to my Dad, and Myeloma UK we would be eternally grateful.
We all love you Dad. From a personal note if I can be half the Dad you have been and still are, I'll have done a bloody good job xx
Thanks all
Dave, Mike, Ste, Ali, Lou, Andy
