Story
The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust helps people like me affected by retinoblastoma (Rb) to see a brighter future.
I was diagnosed with Rb aged 15 months. My left eye was removed and my right eye was treated with radiotherapy. But eventually I would loose all my sight in that eye too.
Experiencing sight loss changed my life massively. First came the denial my sight was getting worse; then came the anger at anyone who dared to breathe; and finally came the depression as I imagined a future missing out on the things most people do - drive a car, watch a movie, and even play sport.
The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) supports families and individuals affected by Rb. They provide support in many emotional and practical ways, and also fund research, raise awareness of this disease and campaign for better service provision.
* £5 could provide a newsletter offering information and support to up to 5 people affected by Rb
* £50 could fund a place at a regional event for a family feeling isolated
* £500 could fund grants for up to three families struggling with the cost of monthly hospital visits
Whatever amount you decide to donate, it will make a difference to CHECT:
"I’ve always known that I had some great support to tap into and that has helped me knowing that when I was ready I could reach out. Your kindness and understanding is really appreciated."
"I don’t have to try and get you to understand the pain that we’ve been through, you already just understand."
"I really can’t thank you enough for the kindness you’ve shown my husband and I. I think I’ve learnt to bury it so deep that when it comes up, it hurts like it was yesterday. "
