Story
On Wednesday 30th March 2016 I will be joining Sky Sports Presenter Jeff Stelling on the final leg of his Men United March for Prostate Cancer UK - a sponsored walk of 26.2 miles from AFC Wimbledon football ground to Wembley Stadium via Brentford, Fulham, Chelsea and QPR.
All money raised will be used to fight prostate cancer, a disease that will affect 1 in 8 men in their lifetime.
In the summer of 2011, at the age of 49, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I had no obvious symptoms. My PSA was 5.7. In November of that year I underwent Brachytherapy. Today, 4 years after treatment, my PSA is 0.2 meaning I have a 98% chance of being cured. If my PSA remains at 0.4 or below for another year then there is less than a 1% chance that it will reoccur.
I consider myself very lucky that my prostate cancer was identified as early as it was. Early treatment can result in a positive outcome.
I would recommend that all men approaching the age of 50+ be aware of their PSA. Don't wait for symptoms. Act now!
