"THE CANOEIST'S EVEREST"
Matt and I have now done this year's Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race. At 125 miles and with 77 portages it is often described as The Canoeist's Everest. It took us 26 hours, 22 minutes and 54 seconds to finish the race! To find out exactly how brilliant and awful it was please visit our website if you haven't already!
WHY THE HELL DID I DO THIS?
As you may or may not know, my father-in-law suffers both from Alzheimer's and vascular dementia.
For Dementia is the first charity that we have found that actually seems to be offering targeted support for those most closely affected by the disease. Of course the patient with any form of dementia needs much specialized care, love and support but the primary carer (the one actually looking after the patient) is too often the one who gets forgotten about. Ironically the primary carer tends to be the one who is actually 'suffering' most from this wretched disease.
For Dementia's 'Admiral Nurses' provide just the kind of support that carers need. Naturally this specialized support costs a lot and this is why I am trying to raise money. At the moment there are nothing like enough Admiral Nurses around to cover the whole of the UK. Currently the closest nurse to Devon is based in Woking! My aim is to raise money so that For Dementia can provide more nurses, across more of the country, to help more families like mine cope with dementia.
Thanks for your time reading this. I am obviously hugely grateful for your support.
See you in Westminster!!!!! (If Matt hasn't drowned me by then!)
Dan
