Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Four months ago, my family were yet again rocked by the devastating news that our nephew, Danny (8years old), had lost his vision completely. This was a rare and unexpected occurrence during the early stages of his recovery from a bone marrow transplant, which he underwent following a relapse of his leukaemia last year.

Danny and his family, who live in Oxford, England, have had an incredibly long and bumpy ride since he was diagnosed with leukaemia just before his 5th birthday (2015). Throughout all of this, Danny and his amazing parents, David and Emily, alongside his triplet brothers, Thomas, Lukas and Aaron (5), have stood strong and approached every new obstacle head on. Danny continues to remain positive, seeing each new challenge as a 'new level' on the ever-changing 'game' of life.

When we heard the news in January that Danny had permanently lost his sight, we were all completely shocked and disheartened. He would now have to face yet another huge life-changing challenge. Our children, Jacob (9) and Ebony (7), were very keen to try to do something to help, despite living on the other side of the world. Jacob suggested a sponsored run and so here we are....Jacob decided to set himself a challenge of running 5km and Ebony chose the 3km run. Rob, who is more a surfer than a runner, will try to keep up with Jacob in the 5km run! I have decided to run the half marathon, which I have done before, but the added challenge will be running the 3km run straight after with Ebony.

Although new challenges for all of us, none of this comes anywhere close to Danny's journey that he continues with his family. Learning to live his life without a sense that most of us take for granted is a huge challenge. However, it is heartening to know that my brother's family are being supported by the Oxfordshire Association for the Blind with their journey.

The Oxfordshire Association for the Blind helps children and adults in the region to adjust to the challenges they face, promoting independence and opportunities for people with severe or partial sight impairments.

Thank you for helping us to support this charity in any way you can, so they can continue the wonderful work they do. Feel free to join us at Jetty2Jetty on Sunday 21st July to cheer us on, or don your running shoes and come for a run!    https://www.j2j.com.au

Kind regards,

Corena and Rob
