Story
Against my better judgement, I’m running the London Marathon on October 2 to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK. I’d be extremely grateful for anything you could spare towards this great cause (the charity, not me running!)
Alzheimer’s disease – the most common cause of dementia worldwide – has a devastating impact on those who develop it, but also on their families, friends and loved ones. I know this from personal experience: in recent years, my grandad and uncle have sadly both suffered from, and succumbed to, Alzheimer’s.
One in nine people age 65 and older (11.3%) has Alzheimer's dementia. Not to be too gloomy, but the world’s population is only getting older, so Alzheimer’s is going to be more and more of a problem in years ahead.
The disease is still quite poorly understood. Without a better understanding of its causes and risk factors, our prospects of finding effective preventions and treatments – and perhaps one day a cure – are unfortunately low. Alzheimer’s Research UK, the charity I’m running for, identifies and funds the best biomedical research
in the UK and internationally.
I began running to escape the tedium of the lockdown 1. For some reason, I actually began to enjoy it and have stuck with it ever since. The opportunity to try a full marathon, through London, while raising money for a cause close to my heart was too good to turn down.
Any and all donations are much appreciated!
Best,
Daniel
