Story
Can Dan cycle the awful cobbled Paris-Roubaix route on a bamboo bicycle*?
To all you kind folk that get lots of requests, this is an interesting one about a proper challenge by my friend Stuart Block who has not only cycled c.13,000km from Joburg to (almost) London, but done it on a rather heavy tandem bicycle. I’m joining him again on one of his closing stages as we follow part of the legendary (for bad, cobble reasons) Paris-Roubaix cycle route, having previously joined in for a 200km in 2 days stint up the Italian Alps, and more recently I ran a 10km race in Glasgow, all to raise awareness and some ££ for the great projects he is raising support for in Zambia.
As you know I am passionate about trying to do something about improving lives of many people who struggle with the complicated battle of poverty in Zambia in particular, mainly through the rural development organisation www.nwzdt.org ** that I help run, and so it is a great privilege to join in supporting this charity that is doing inspirational education/community care projects in Zambia and that Stuart is supporting: (www.beyondourselves.co.uk )
Stuart has done an amazing job of linking in to schools and other organisations along his route, and has had many people join him ranging from the famous and fit (Lawrence Dallalio and Freddie Flintoff) to the unknown and unfit city types like me panting out a few hundred kilometres, with little or no training, but trying to do our bit nonetheless, so I would be most grateful if you could spare a few ££ for Beyond Ourselves in recognition of my Triplet of Physical Efforts (400km Up Alp and Across Cobble on a bamboo bicycle, and 10km running the ahem dangerous streets of Glasgow) - and mainly for Stuarts 13,000km epic effort on Thandie – his blog is well worth a read www.beyondthebike.org .
Thank you for any and all donations.
Dan
*Bamboo bicycle i hear you say? Yes they exist, and are a fantastic product – last year I attempted to cycle 1,500km across Angola, following the footsteps of my great grandfather, on a bamboo bicycle made by inspirational social enterprise Zambikes www.zambike.com . Check them out and order a custom made frame that will make you the talk of your friends, and support a fantastic enterprise in Zambia
**NWZDT and Beyond Ourselves are hoping to collaborate on some education projects in Zambia
