Story
Welcome to my London Marathon 2012 fundraising page in honour of my dear father, Ray Flynn.
My father was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma on 31st March 2011 and it turned his life upside down. He knew he had a hard battle ahead of him but he knew he wasn't alone - he had his two children, his parents, his siblings and close friends all throwing their support his way.
After spending four months in hospital undergoing intensive chemotherapy (and chatting up the nurses at every opportunity!) we discovered the lymphoma had spread to his Central Nervous System - completely taking his eyesight and with that, his independence. We could do nothing but watch in horror as any hope of a recovery slipped away. My father returned home. Home to die and there was nothing anyone could do about it.
For eighteen heartbreaking days me and my sister cared for him every hour of every day. We watched in despair as he grew weaker and weaker and on the morning of 27th August 2011, aged just 47, he passed away with my sister and me at his side.
In my father's memory, I will be running the Virgin London Marathon on 22nd April 2012 - looking to raise £3600 for Macmillan Cancer Support. To do this, I need your help and over the coming months I will be organising a blindfolded skydive as well as a charity evening with my sister to help raise money and hopefully reach my target.
Big or small, your contribution will help Macmillan assist people living with cancer. Here's how your generosity can help:
£17.50 - could pay for one more member of a cancer support group to go on a social event with other support group members.
£51 - could buy a liquidiser for someone who can't eat solid food as a result of their cancer treatment.
£350 - could pay for a convalescent break for someone with cancer and their carer.
£3,333 - could keep a Macmillan cancer information and support centre stocked with all the information resources it needs to support people affected by cancer for a year.
£29,250 - will pay for a Macmillan benefits adviser to work in a Citizen's Advice Bureau for a year providing welfare benefits advice.
£47,747 - could fund a Macmillan nurse for 1 year, providing emotional and practical help to people affected by cancer and their families.
£105,333 - could fund one of Macmillan's new community based rehabilitation support teams. Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
