I may no longer carry this same hype when it comes to my birthday and blowing out birthday candles with friends on Zoom was definitely not expected. However, this year I was counting down days in eager anticipation - my 24th birthday was planned as a family trip to Palestine.
The world is in crisis and yet I feel like I have everything I need for my birthday - my family. At home with my family, healthy and with a roof over our heads. I am overwhelmed with the amount of gratitude I have during this difficult time. 2020 has been a rough start, but seeing the world support anyone and everyone that needs it - be it the NHS, a self-employed worker, the homeless or even a friend makes me believe in meliorism. Meliorism: the belief that the world can be made better by human effort.
For my birthday this year, my goal (or birthday wish) is to raise £5,000 to help provide urgent healthcare to Palestinian refugees living under occupation by donating to MAP (Medical Aid for Palestinians), as they are in need of urgent action to respond and prevent the spread of COVID-19. https://www.map.org.uk/
All and any support is extremely appreciated. Large or small, every penny counts.
Stay home, stay safe!
Much love,
Dania
