Fundraising for Salisbury District Hospital Stars Appeal
Story
I’m walking from Blandford Forum, Dorset, across the fields and along byways and paths, arriving at Hyde Park Corner, London, on the fifth day after setting out. It’s a total of 132 miles (give or take: my phone will tell me exactly how far I’ve been!). The walk will start at sunrise on May 9th 2022, and I aim to get to Hyde Park Corner sometime in the afternoon on May 13th.
I’m raising money for the fantastic Stars Appeal Live charity, which provides all manner of arts for the well-being of patients at Salisbury District Hospital (and other local hospitals).
I’m a musician on the roster of artists at the hospitals, and nothing prepared me for playing a tune for an unresponsive patient, who suddenly starts humming and then singing along with it. Deeply humbling, and incredibly fulfilling.
During Covid, I played for the hospitals, strictly outside in the yards, so patients could hear, but be out of harm’s way with possible Covid exposure, and I was given this work at a time when so many other musicians were struggling to get any work at all.
In my view, it’s payback time! I’ve always wanted to walk the old roads and routes to London, and now’s my chance! I have a great reason to do it!
