Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Our youngest son James, who is now 5 years old, was diagnosed with a rare liver condition called Biliary Atresia when he was just a few weeks old. His big brother Dan was 15 months old at the time. James was scheduled for surgery, called the Kasai procedure, in the week following diagnosis. After a 7 hour operation and a week in hospital we were relieved to be able to take James home where he could be reunited with Dan. We had not even heard of the Children's Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF) at this point but they provided help in the form of leaflets describing what the condition is and opportunities to meet families with children with the same condition.
CLDF was formed in 1980 and is a unique national charity dedicated to taking action against the effects of all liver diseases of childhood. Supporting research into childhood liver disease is a vital area of CLDF’s work. It not only enhances understanding and improves treatments, but also gives young people and their families like us hope for a better future. They support a wide range of projects, including clinical and laboratory-based research, with over £8m of research funding delivered over the last 37 years. Most of this money has been donated by families, friends, relatives and other supporters and it is essential that their research can continue.
Dan is only 6 years old (he’ll turn 7 in July) but has decided he is going to cycle a whopping 100km during July to support the CLDF. Dan hasn’t been out on his bike since the start of the pandemic and completing this distance around his home learning and our work commitments will certainly be a challenge! We are so proud Dan wants to raise money for a charity very close to our hearts.
We would also like to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation. Those who donate their organs give a second chance of life thanks to their generous act. It is important to share your decision to be an organ donor with your family. This will give them more confidence that they know that you wanted to donate and make it easier for them to honour your decision.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the CLDF. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
