Story
On Sunday 7th July 2019, the Cancer Research Wales team will be running The Wales Marathon in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record the most runners linked to complete a marathon.
As a collective, we are aiming to raise £100,000 for Cancer Research Wales. Sadly, almost all of our lives are touched by cancer in some way. Most recently, my uncle has been diagnosed with terminal bone cancer, and my wife's gran has been undergoing grueling chemotherapy in an attempt to beat a cancerous lump in her abdomen. I am taking part in this event not only in their honour, but also in the hope of finding a cure so that future generations will not have to live in fear of the dreaded 'c' word.
The current Guinness World Record for ‘the most people linked to complete a marathon’ is held by a group of 112 runners from Canada who completed the Calgary Marathon in 2017 – there’s a video of them in action here which gives you an idea of how myself and the rest of #TeamCRW will be running.
Similarly to the Canadian group in the video, we’ll be linked by bungee cords and carabiners. In order for the record to be officially verified by Guinness World Records, every runner that starts the race must cross the finish line (although there is no time limit to get to the finish). This means the group can only run as fast as their slowest runner (which will be immensely frustrating for me!). If someone needs to stop for the toilet we will all have to stop. If someone is injured, the group will have to carry them for the rest of the distance!
I would be really grateful for any contributions to the cause. All of the money raised stays in Wales to hopefully contribute towards a step in the right direction to finding a cure - something I'm sure we would all love to see.
COME ON WALES, LET'S DO THIS!
