Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Some of you will have known my best friend Justin Smith. If you never met him, you will have heard me bang on about him over the years. He's been dead nearly six years now. Everyone should have had a best friend like Justin.

We met at nursery school at age 2. Went to the same primary school, where we were inseperable. Then to the same secondary school, Llanharri. Then left that Welsh secondary school - cos we hated it - and, without our parent's permission - and in Justin's case, without his parents' knowledge - moved to a different sixth form together so we could speak English without getting shouted at.

He went to art school, I went to study Law in London. Later we both became pop stars for a bit - him with Tigertailz, me with Nomad. He played guitar on my hit  'Just a Groove', I produced one of their singles, 'Show Me'.

When I was offered a chat show on BBC Wales in 1999, guess who directed 'Damon Rochefort Tonight?' Who else, but Justin.

I was best man at both his weddings; he was the person I first told I was gay; we were closer than brothers - the one person who knew me so well, I could never pull the wool over his eyes. My best friend.

So when Justin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2007, I felt like the floor had been pulled from benath me. And when he died, I knew life would never be quite the same.

Velindre in Cardiff did so much to help Justin in the last months of his life, and the kindness and care they showed to his family and friends made it easier for us all to cope. Me and his wonderful wife Shan Cothi - who talked me into this climb - were there for Justin and each other, but Velindre was there for all of us.

So a load of us Welshies are repaying the favour by trying to raise as much money as possible for this wonderful place. Some rugby players, comedians, singers and me are going to be climbing 19,000 feet over 9 days and reaching the peak of Kilimanjaro. Then I will symbolically flick the V's at cancer from the rooftop of the world.

Please, please give a few quid if you can - cancer touches all of us and places like Velindre can only continue doing the work they do with the help and support of people like you and me.

The thought of me schlepping all the way up a massive mountain in Africa would REALLY make Justin laugh...
