Story
Hi, I'm Damo... thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I will be running two ultramarathons in 2014 to raise money for Anthony Nolan.
Every day, this charity helps two people in need of a lifesaving transplant by using their register to find remarkable donors who have matching stem cells.
When I first heard about Anthony Nolan around 5 years ago, I became aware that for many people suffering from a blood cancer, such as leukaemia, a blood stem cell transplant may be their last chance of life and I joined the donor register. There are currently almost 1,600 people in the UK waiting for a stem cell transplant and 37,000 worldwide. Anthony Nolan needs help to find a donor for every patient who needs one, by recruiting more lifesaving donors. This is the reason I chose this charity; to raise awareness and vital funds to carry on their lifesaving work.
£500 is the average cost of testing and storing a cord blood unit to provide a potentially lifesaving transplant.
£100 is the cost of recruiting, tissue typing and maintaining a new potential donor on the Anthony Nolan register.
£17 is the cost of a special box used for transporting donated stem cells from a donor to a patient for a potentially lifesaving transplant.
£7 is the cost of the ‘spit kit’ used for taking a potential donor’s saliva sample for tissue-typing – the first stage of joining the Anthony Nolan register.
On the 21st June 2014, I will run 69 miles from Carlisle to Newcastle. Then two months later, on 22nd August 2014, I will run 184 miles along the full length of the Thames, from London to the source of the river in the Cotswolds.
With your support, by giving to Anthony Nolan, it will also inspire and motivate me to keep running when the going gets tough during these endurance events.
So please donate... every little helps!
Many thanks,
Damo
