The Poole Harbour Osprey Reintroduction Project is led by local charity Birds of Poole Harbour partnered with the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation and Wildlife Windows. The project aims to to restore a breeding population of Ospreys to the south coast of England through translocating up to 60 Osprey chicks from Scotland between 2017 and 2021 and releasing them in the Poole Harbour area. The juveniles then migrate in the autumn, typically to countries in West Africa, and when they return a few years later, they recognise the south coast as home.
The project has already had success in that one of the birds from the 2017 cohort has returned in 2019, recognisable through his ring number of LS7. Fortunately, a female from Rutland (CJ7) has taken interest in this area as it has been home to juvenile ospreys since 2017, and on the return of LS7, the pair bonded and have been courting throughout the summer. We are hopeful that over the next few years the pair will return again and breed.
